Structuralist Narratology

Structuralist Narratology

A narrative is a telling of some true or fictitious event or connected sequence of events, sometimes recounted by a narrator to an audience.A narrative is usually a story in prose or verse that includes characters, events, action and dialogue. A narrative communicates certain events through the experience of the characters.

Narrative text includes any type of writing that relates a series of events and includes both fiction (novels, short stories, poems) and nonfiction (memoirs, biographies, news stories).

Narratology, the study of narratives and narrative structure, is the science of narratives. Narratology, as a discipline, has been traveling nearly for 50 years since Tzvetan Todorov invented the term “narratology” in 1969. Todorov coined the term “narratology”, in his work, the Grammar of Decameron,

Aristole states that the plot should have a beginning, a middle, and an end in a dramatic structure . And also talks about five stages of narration; exposition, rising action, climax, falling action and resolution/denouement. Which are the structure of narrative proposed by Aristotle in his poetics.

Structuralist Narratology is instigated from Russian formalism and French structuralism.Tzvetan Todorov and Roland Barthes espoused this approach to analyze the work of art within the overall structure rather than the isolated individual stories.

Structuralist Narratology illustrates how a story’s meaning develops from its overall structure (the langue) rather than from each individual story’s isolated theme (the parole).

Genette goes on to distinguish three aspects of narrative reality — the story (the narrative content or the signified), the narrative (the signifier, discourse or the narrative text) and narrating (the narrating act itself).

In Structural Semantics (1966), A.J. Griemas (1917-1992) proposes his model of narrative analysis. He mentions that all elements and their combinations in narrative employ two aspects: actants and actors, which are similar to Saussure’s
langue and parole. While the actants function like langue, the
deep structure, the actors are similar to parole, the surface
structure. Hence, actants are abstract entities that organise the
narrative in its concrete form and actors are visible and concrete
elements of a narrative.

Gerard Genette proposes three levels of narratives;

* Story(histoire), Which is narrated
*the narrative(recit)
*the way the narrative is narrated
(narration).

These levels interact with each other so that narrative can progress. The interaction is based on  three aspects:

Tense
Mood
Voice

Tense is the arrangement of events in the narrative that work within the frameworks of order, duration and time.

Mood creates the atmosphere of the narrative, which depends on
distance and perspective.

Voice refers to the voice of the
narrator. Voice helps understand the narrator’s relationship to the
story being narrated and the way it is being told.

Vladimir Propp was a Russian philologist and structuralist who analyzed the basic plot components of Russian folktales in order to identify their simplest irreducible narrative elements.

Based on his sample of 100 Russian folk stories, Propp believed that there have 31 narratemes and 7  types.

Seven dramatic personae

  • Villain.
  • The Donor (provider)
  • The Helper.
  • The Princess (a sought-for person)
  • Dispatcher.
  • The Hero.
  • The False Hero.

In short, narratology is based on the idea of a common literary language, or a universal pattern of codes that operates within the text of a work.
Structuralist narratology is the illustrates how a story's meaning develops from its overall structure (the langue) rather than from each individual story's isolated theme (the parole).

No Alphabets in Sight by Poykayil Appachan

No Alphabets in sight
       Poykayil Appachan(1879- 1939)

Poykayil Appachan or Poykayil Yohan nan, a pre- eminent figure of the Kerala Renaissance. As a revolutionary poet, he stood up against the rigid caste system existed in Kerala. He was first dalit activist and the founder of Pratyaksha Raksha Daiva Shabha.

No, not a single letter is seen
On my race
So many histories are seen
On so many races
Scrutinize each one of them
The whole histories of the world
Not a single letter is seen
On my race
There was no one on this earth
To write the history
Of my race in the olden days
What a pity!
Think of it
Regret fills within
Let me add something
In my own melody
The story of
A people who lived in Kerala
Since the ancient times.
And how they became demons
No shame have I
To say the faults of my caste
Though all blame me
A cursed offspring on earth
How is it possible
That all blame us
Till the end
Of earth and sky
How can God
Who shaped everything
Allow this to happen
On earth today?

Romanticism
Romanticism as an intellectual and artistic movement came into fashion during the late 19th century. It influenced many disciplines, including literature, art, music, and architecture. Romanticists in art and literature emphasized feelings and
emotions in reaction to the Enlightenment period, which relied solely on facts and rationality to reach truth. Romanticists
chose instead to investigate beauty, landscapes, and intuition to find truth. They also placed heavy emphasis on dreams, individualism, and self-expression as a way to communicate, and they worried less about rationality and objectivity.

Cambridge, in June 1794, Coleridge became friends with poet Robert Southey, and the two concocted a plan to form an idealistic society, known as a pantisocracy, in Susquehanna Valley, Pennsylvania. In their utopian society everyone would live simple, virtuous lives, working together with the common ideals of justice and liberty. Their plan was in part a reaction to the political debates of the time. The events of the French Revolution (1789–99) had affected all of Europe, and intellectuals were questioning the best forms of government and seeking to do away with monarchical rule. In August, Coleridge and Southey left Cambridge and went to Bristol, where Coleridge worked as a public lecturer. To raise money for their move to America, Coleridge and Southey wrote a three-act play titled The Fall of Robespierre, which was based on real events of the French Revolution. Maximilien Robespierre, a major controversial political figure—loved, feared, and hated by many—who sided with the common people over the nobles and had a hand in the 1793 execution of the king of France, King Louis XVI, had been publicly beheaded in July 1794.

Breaking Silence

Breaking Silence by Janice Miri Kitani

Breaking Silence is a poem by Japanese American poet Janice Miri
Kitani, who known for her works that draws the gruesome effect of war, relocation, imprisonment. It is talks about the experiences of Japanese Americans when they were put in to interment camps during World War II. “Breaking Silence,” focuses on her mother’s experience testifying to the
Commission on Wartime Relocation and Internment of Japanese American Civilians in 1981.

The poem reflects on the knowledge of silence of the generation of Japanese - American’s and also expresses her mother's experience of feeling dehumanizined and isolated from the world. They didn't have any voice to express their true feelings. Japanese Americans were brutally treated by the US.

The poet shows  admiration towards her mother as she testifies against wartime injustice. Actually they wanted to break the silence. But silence was the only way they could express their ideas and thoughts. Their silence shows sorrows and frustration faced by the Japanese Americans in various concentration camps.

In “Breaking Silence,” Mirikitani creates the image of a hopeful, blossoming garden that represents her mother’s faith in creating a prosperous life in the United States; however, her aspirations become suffocated: “The land she built / like
hope / grew quietly / irises, roses, sweet peas / opening, opening. / And then / all was hushed . . .
/ . . . / silenced” (lines 66-76).

They consider their silence as
integral parts of their identity as Asian Americans. some are shameful silences that need to be “broken,” as Mirikitani observes, but the healthy silences are inherently part of the Asian American identity.

Japanese Americans are recognized easily with their pale yellow golden colour. In this poem Miri Kitani vividly portrays racial discrimination faced by Asian people in America.
Japanese Americans made believe that their faces betrayed them. So she brings out the pain racism.

"My youth is buried in Rohwer'' /

Which shows they were in different concentration camps like Rohwer, Amache gate, Tule lake... etc.

The poem ends with an optimistic tone. At last they are breaking their silence and unite for their freedom and raise their voice against the injustice they had been facing. They declare that:

"We here everything
We are unafraid

Our language is beautiful"

The poet ends by saying that after breaking the silence they are not afraid and feel that their language is beautiful. By using that language they will share  the pain and suffering they had in.
