Wuthering Heights

           Wuthering Heights

              Emily Bronte( 1818- 1848)

Wuthering Heights is written by Emily Bronte and is considered to be the only novel that was completed by her in the year 1847. The novel focuses on the themes of love, social class
and status, supernatural elements, suffering and most importantly the factor of revenge that is in a way guiding the whole story.

The story opens with entry of Lockwood, who comes at Wuthering Heights to make plans with Heathcliff to lease the nearby house, Thrushcross Grange. Lockwood feels strange about the place and the behavior of Heathcliff makes him even more curious to know about
the history of the place. He invites the maid of the house to tell him about the inhabitants of Wuthering Heights.

Nelly (the house maid) starts narrating the story and tells about how she started working for
Earnshaws at an early age. She tells that how things went downhill when Earnshaw went on an outing to Liverpool and got back with a dark little vagrant kid named Heathcliff to live with his family and children, Catherine and Hindley.
In no time Catherine and Heathcliff are closed together, yet Hindley starts disliking him for each and every thing he do to get closer to his father. Catherine and Heathcliff shares adventurous childhood activities on stormy moors. Hindley is sent to a college to pursue
higher studies.

Hindley gets back from college as soon as he gets the news that his father has died. He had married Frances and his feelings for Heathcliff still did not change. He treats Heathcliff as a servant. Catherine tries to provide Heathcliff with solace and console him and they maintain their friendship.

One night Heathcliff and Catherine meander aimlessly down to  Thrushcross Grange to keep
an eye on the Linton kids, Edgar and Isabella. At the point she gets bitten by a dog and is compelled to remain at the Grange for five weeks to recover. There she comes close to
Edgar. Soon thereafter she returns to Wuthering Heights.Frances dies while giving birth to their son, Hareton. After all this, Hindley become a raging alcoholic and diverts his whole focus on making things miserable for Heathcliff and
everybody else in the house.

Catherine married Edgar even after confessing to Nelly about her feelings for Heathcliff.
Heathcliff disappears for three years. But one day He turns with some money and a revengeful mission
against Hindley who is not in a very good health. He also discovers that Catherine married Edgar and is living at Thrushcross Gran.

Heathcliff sets his plan into action to gain Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange. He keeps on visiting Catherine at Thrushcross Grange, however Edgar deals with him like an outsider. To gain Edgar's property, Heathcliff weds Isabella Linton. Heathcliff becomes abusive towards Isabella.

Edgar and Heathcliff have an argument which sends Catherine to the sickbed, from which she never truly recuperates. She gives birth to a girl likewise named Catherine. Catherine dies after a while which makes Heathcliff more furious and sorrowful.Isabella escapes for London as she could no longer deal with Heathcliff’s abusiveness. She
gives birth to a son, Linton Heathcliff.

Nelly Dean remains at Thrushcross Grange for thirteen years to raise Catherine. Edgar and Nelly ensure that Catherine stay away from Wuthering Heights. But Catherine is attracted to experience the fields and the mystery. She reaches Wuthering Heights, where she meets Hareton, Hindley's son. Hareton has turned into a snorting, uninformed brute because of Heathcliff's detestable treatment. In any case, Catherine is glad to have some friendship.

Edgar recovers his nephew Linton after the death of Isabella and takes him back to live at Thrushcross Grange. Heathcliff has different plans, and wants Linton to live with him.

Catherine encounters Heathcliff at the moors and goes to Wuthering Heights where she meets Linton. She and Linton start a mysterious correspondence of love. Linton becomes a tool for Heathcliff for taking revenge as wedding Catherine would guarantee that Linton acquires Thrushcross Grange.

Heathcliff tricks Nelly and Catherine back to Wuthering Heights, where he detains them and pressurize Catherine to wed Linton. Edgar dies from his long sickness and so does Linton.

Heathcliff attains both Wuthering Height and Thrushcross Grange. He leases Thrushcross Grange to Lockwood.Catherine teaches Hareton to read whereas Heathcliff becomes too obsessed with dead Catherine and eventually dies from grief and is buried near her grave.

Catherine and Hareton acquire both the houses, marry each other and start a new life. Lockwood leaves the place and let the couple have some peaceful life.
